Skin biopsy is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in veterinary dermatology, but the quality of information they provide depends on much more than simply collecting a sample. From selecting the right patient and lesion to proper biopsy technique and specimen submission, each step influences diagnostic success. Through a case-based review of real-world examples, this session will highlight practical strategies for obtaining high-quality biopsies, avoiding common pitfalls, and maximizing the value of histopathologic interpretation. Participants will gain a systematic approach to biopsy decision-making that can be immediately applied in clinical practice.
- Identify appropriate indications for skin biopsy and recognize situations in which biopsy is unlikely to provide clinically useful diagnostic information.
- Select optimal lesions and biopsy sites to maximize diagnostic yield while minimizing common sampling errors and artifacts.
- Apply best practices for biopsy collection, handling, fixation, and submission to improve specimen quality and facilitate accurate histopathologic interpretation.
- Recognize common limitations of histopathology and integrate pathology findings with clinical presentation to improve diagnostic decision-making.
