It’s a Cats’ World, We’re Just Living In It – Understanding Feline Behavior

Oct 16, 2026
Carson City Clinical Theater

Feline welfare extends beyond physical health to include mental and emotional well-being, with behavior serving as a vital indicator of overall quality of life. This session will explore the role of behavior in feline welfare, emphasizing how stress reduction, enrichment, and support for natural behaviors directly impact both health outcomes and the human–animal bond. Using the “Five Freedoms” as a framework, attendees will examine how to address the core needs of cats—from freedom from hunger, discomfort, pain, and distress to the freedom to express normal behaviors. Practical strategies for integrating behavioural health into daily practice will be highlighted, equipping veterinary professionals with tools to create healthier, happier, and more behaviorally balanced cats in homes and shelters alike.

  • Describe the foundations of feline behavior, including the influence of genetics, environment, and early experiences on personality and social development.
  • Identify key feline communication signals —visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory—and interpret how cats use them to interact with humans, other cats, and their environment.
  • Recognize signs of fear, stress, and anxiety in cats and apply behavior-friendly handling techniques based on LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) principles.
  • Explain the importance of environmental enrichment, safe spaces, and resource placement in promoting feline behavioral wellness in both home and shelter settings.
