Reviewing the ACVIM Consensus Statement on Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Extrusions

Oct 15, 2026
Reno Clinical Theater
Neurology

Thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion is one of the most common neurologic emergencies encountered in small-animal practice, yet decisions regarding imaging, surgery, conservative care, rehabilitation, and monitoring can vary considerably. This session will translate the ACVIM consensus recommendations into practical guidance for general practitioners. Using common clinical presentations, participants will review neurologic grading, prognostic indicators, indications for referral and surgery, conservative management strategies, and recommendations for recurrence prevention and long-term care.

  • Apply consensus recommendations when selecting diagnostic imaging, surgical referral, or conservative management.
  • Develop an evidence-informed plan for analgesia, activity restriction, rehabilitation, monitoring, and prevention of complications or recurrence.
  • Describe the consensus process and the benefits and limitations of consensus statements.
