Getting to the Root of It: Dental Abscess Management in Rabbits

Oct 17, 2026
Tahoe Clinical Theater
Exotics

Dental abscessation is a common and often challenging condition in rabbits, characterized by chronic infection, caseous debris, and frequent recurrence. Effective management requires a thorough understanding of hypselodont dentition, pathology of closely related structures, and the limitations of both medical and surgical therapies. This session will provide a practical, case-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic abscesses in rabbits. Emphasis will be placed on selecting appropriate imaging modalities and microbiological diagnostics, and developing treatment plans that integrate surgical intervention, local and systemic antimicrobial therapy, and long-term management. Attendees will gain clinically applicable strategies to improve outcomes, reduce recurrence, and guide client expectations when managing these complex cases.
