Hyperlipidemia in Dogs and Cats: Clinical Approach and Management

Hyperlipidemia is a common yet often underrecognized metabolic abnormality in small animal practice that may be incidental or associated with significant underlying disease. This session will provide a practical, evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of hyperlipidemia in dogs and cats. Attendees will review the pathophysiology of primary and secondary hyperlipidemia, breed predispositions, and common endocrine, metabolic, and inflammatory disorders associated with lipid abnormalities. Emphasis will be placed on appropriate diagnostic workup, interpretation of lipid testing, and when intervention is warranted. Current treatment strategies, including dietary modification, management of underlying disease, and pharmacologic options, will be discussed. Participants will leave with practical tools to confidently recognize, investigate, and manage hyperlipidemia in clinical practice while improving long-term patient outcomes.
