Approaching Limb Fractures (Case-Based)

Oct 17, 2026
Reno Clinical Theater
Surgery

Limb fractures are commonly encountered in veterinary practice, yet deciding when to splint, bandage, monitor, repair, or refer can be challenging. In this practical, case-based session, Dr. Karanvir S. Aulakh, a board-certified small animal surgeon, will review a variety of common and challenging limb fracture cases encountered in dogs and cats. Through real-world examples, attendees will learn a practical approach to fracture assessment, initial stabilization, radiographic interpretation, and treatment planning. Emphasis will be placed on determining which fractures may be managed in general practice, which warrant referral, and how to optimize outcomes regardless of treatment approach. Common fixation principles, bandage and splint considerations, complication avoidance, postoperative monitoring, and client communication will also be discussed. Participants will leave with greater confidence in approaching fracture cases, making informed treatment decisions, and knowing when referral or surgical intervention is most appropriate.

  • Develop a practical, systematic approach to evaluating limb fractures, including fracture classification, radiographic assessment, and initial stabilization.
  • Differentiate fractures that may be appropriately managed in general practice from those that warrant referral to a surgical specialist.
  • Understand fundamental principles of fracture management, including bandaging, splinting, fixation options, postoperative care, and common complications.
  • Improve confidence in treatment planning, client communication, and decision-making to optimize outcomes in dogs and cats with limb fractures.
