In an ideal world, we'd simply leave toxic work environments behind. However, the reality for many veterinary support staff is that walking away isn't always an option. Financial constraints, limited job markets, or personal circumstances often mean we must learn to navigate and thrive in less-than-ideal situations. This lecture addresses the crucial skills needed to manage difficult workplace dynamics when leaving isn't feasible., with emphasis placed on evidence-based strategies for maintaining professional integrity, protecting personal well-being, and fostering positive change from within challenging veterinary practice environments. Topics discussed will include emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, stress management, and organizational psychology to equip attendees with a robust toolkit for navigating complex workplace dynamics.

Upon completion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

1.     Analyze the impact of poor leadership on team dynamics, patient care quality, and practice performance, while identifying key indicators of toxic work environments in veterinary settings.

2.     Evaluate advanced communication techniques for addressing concerns with management, including the application of active listening, assertive communication, and conflict resolution strategies.

3.     Synthesize evidence-based stress management techniques and self-care practices to design a personal resilience plan tailored to the challenges of working under difficult leadership in veterinary practices.

4.     Formulate strategies for influencing positive cultural shifts from non-leadership positions, incorporating principles of organizational psychology and change management theory.
