Pharmacology of Analgesics: What Does that Drug Do?

Misconceptions of analgesic drug effects/adverse effects often limit efficacious and safe use of the drug. Mechanisms of action, appropriate patient selection and appropriate use of a variety of analgesic drugs used for both acute and chronic pain will be discussed.

• At the end of this session the attendee will be able to
• 1.Describe the most common effects/adverse effects of a variety of analgesic drugs.
• 2.Define patient limitations for the use of those drugs.
• 3.Develop efficacious and safe analgesic protocols using unimodal or multimodal drug therapy.
