Small Animal , Orthopedic

Patella luxation is still a common condition in dogs, more so than cats. It’s signalment can vary depending on the patient size, breed, and age. It is important to be able to assess, grade, and decide when to recommend surgical intervention for these patients to avoid lifelong arthritis and ambulatory problems.

  • •Know the signalment and clinical presentation of a patient with patella luxation
  • •Know how to grade patella luxation, and when cranial cruciate ligament injury is also present
  • •Know when to refer a patient with patella luxation for surgery
  • •Understand some of the more common methods of surgical repair of patella luxation and how to correct it along with cruciate ligament injury as well as some of the newer efficient methods
