Surgical Management of Upper Airway Conditions

Upper airway conditions are a common cause of poor performance or respiratory noise in the horse. This presentation will provide an overview of clinical signs, diagnostic methods (sufficiency of resting vs need for dynamic endoscopy), treatment and expected outcome in these disorders.

  • Recognize clinical signs and endoscopic appearance of common upper airway conditions in the horse
  • Understanding when additional diagnostic methods should be pursued prior to surgery
  • Identification of conditions that will influence treatment choices (e.g arytenoid chondritis)
  • Briefly summarize surgical procedures, potential complications and prognosis
