Differentiating Down Dogs

16 Oct 2025
Reno Clinical Theater
Neurology

Not every down dog has intervertebral disc disease. This session explores the wide range of differential diagnoses for paresis and paralysis in canine patients, emphasizing that a thorough neurological exam and thoughtful history-taking are essential for accurate localization and diagnosis. From spinal trauma, inflammatory diseases, and vascular events to neuromuscular conditions and mimic syndromes like orthopedic injury or systemic illness, we’ll review key clinical clues that help distinguish these conditions in general practice. Practical guidance will be provided on narrowing the differential list and prioritizing diagnostics and treatments—especially in settings where MRI or referral is not readily available
