This session covers practical triage of the equine neonate in the ambulatory setting, from the initial phone call to examination on the farm. Several of the most common emergent problems in the neonatal foal will be discussed along with diagnostic and therapeutic options, and when to consider referral.
- Review the fundamentals of CPR in the equine neonate
- Discuss appropriate intravenous fluid protocols for the hypoglycemic and/or hypoperfused foal
- Understand the importance of adequate transfer of passive immunity in the equine neonate, including appropriate diagnostics, and therapeutics in the face of failure
- Formulate an initial diagnostic and treatment plan for a suspected septic foal
