Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) appears to be a clinical syndrome and not a single disease. It is a multifactorial and complex inflammatory syndrome in which the skin is the main route of exposure. CAD results from an inherited predisposition to develop hypersensitivities to environmental allergens that do not induce a problem in non-allergic individuals. Allergens can include dust mites, pollens, dander, insect particles and molds. Understanding how to appropriately rule out other causes of pruritus in dogs perform confirming diagnosis of CAD is crucial. Also, confidence in how to utilize anti-pruritic therapies to provide comfort from this lifelong disease.
