This session will focus on intra-operative decision making and specific surgical technique for resection and anastomosis of the small intestine in dogs and cats. Our discussion will include how to assess intestinal viability and decide between enterotomy and resection, the amount that can be safely resected in each area of the small intestine, and steps for decreasing the risk of dehiscence.

  • Assess intestinal viability and decide if resection and anastomosis is indicated
  • Recognize factors that increase the risk of intestinal dehiscence and how to address them
  • Understand proper techniques for resection and anastomosis of small intestine in the dog and cat
  • Know the consequence of resecting large portions of different regions of the small intestine
