Topical therapy is the treatment of choice for most cases of otitis. Higher concentrations of medication are achieved through topical administration compared to systemic routes. Topical therapy also delivers the medication directly to the affected area. To ensure success with topical therapy, the ear canal should be free of obstructions (foreign body, mass, excessive hair or wax) so the medication can better penetrate the epithelium so flushing will briefly be discussed as well.
