Infectious Causes of Thrombocytopenia, a Clinical Approach

23 Oct 2019
Clinical Theater 1
Internal Medicine

Thrombocytopenia is a common hematologic abnormality in dogs. Knowledge of which organisms are associated with thrombocytopenia and how they cause it can be used to systematically approach the diagnosis and treatment of thrombocytopenic patients.

  • Utilize knowledge about physiologic mechanisms of thrombocytopenia to facilitate clinical reasoning in thrombocytopenic patients.
  • Recognize ways that infections can cause thrombocytopenia.
  • Formulate an approach to screen patients with suspected immune-mediated thrombocytopenia for underlying infectious disease.
