Beyond Opioids: Balanced Anesthesia meets Multimodal Analgesia- Developing a Patient Specific Drug Protocol
An anesthetic drug protocol should be formulated to meet the individual needs of the patient based on the information obtained during the preanesthetic period. This presentation will define the components of balanced anesthesia and provide an overview of the common anesthetic drugs used for premedication, induction and maintenance. Complete anesthetic drug protocols will be discussed for specific patients with a special focus on “opioid lite” protocols due to the opioid shortage that has plagued the USA these last few years.
- 1. Importance if formulating a patient specific drug protocol
- 2. Define components of balanced anesthesia and multimodal analgesia using a step wise approach to drug selection
- 3. Overview of common anesthesia and analgesic drugs available
- 4. Discuss example drug protocols with emphasis on going 'opioid lite'
